About Me

Hi, I’m Claire, The Fermentress. I first started experimenting with fermentation after in-depth reading of people like Michael Pollan, Barbara Kingsolver, and Sandor Katz, and of Tim Spector’s work on the gut microbiome. I started fermetation because I wanted to introduce more cultured foods to my diet to counteract all the artificial ingredients we find in the modern diet. My first fermentation experiment, and still one of my favourites, was homemade ginger ale. During this period, I also attempted my first sourdough starter. I failed miserably and ended up with a stinky, grimy looking mess, and I wouldn’t return to sourdough for many years. But despite mishaps, I continued my journey with fermentation because I discovered such a wealth and variety of good taste, interesting concoctions, and deliciousness, and this site is a way to share this passion with you, both for the health benefits, and for our natural inclination as humans to seek out the tasty in life.
